Mindy Chen is a Neurobiology/Physiology and Psychology double major. After graduation, she plans to attend medical school and pursue a career in internal medicine. She enjoys teaching GEMS100, the introduction course for Gemstone freshmen. Outside of Gemstone, she conducts research on the neurophysiological basis of behavior and is heavily involved in community service. She is a member of the Epsilon Mu chapter of the co-ed service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega. In her free time she enjoys reading, hanging out with friends, traveling, and competing with her dragonboat team.

Yu-Chieh (Jay) Chiao | Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

Hi everyone! My name is Yu-Chieh Chiao, but people just call me Jay. I moved to Maryland from Taiwan when I was 9 years old, and I've been living here ever since. Besides English, I'm also quite fluent in Mandarin Chinese. A couple of things I enjoy doing when I have free time include hanging out with friends, watching movies, playing basketball/tennis, and sleeping. I'm majoring in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering here at UMCP, and I'm also the vice-president of the UMD Dragonboat Club. I will be working in Dr. Ehrman's nanoparticles lab this summer as well as taking some summer courses. I am on the H2S subgroup along with Hubert Huang and Melissa Yu.

Lawrence Cho | Psychology + Statistics

Lawrence Cho is a Psychology and Statistics double major. He is a peer counselor at the UMD Help Center, an undergraduate-run hotline. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with friends, eating, and listening to music.

Hubert Huang | Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering Major.

Brian Lin | Neurobiology + Physiology

Brian is a Neurobiology and Physiology major with an interest in pre-medicine. He is from Bethesda, Maryland and attended Walt Whitman High School for his high school education. He is very interested in both science and medicine. Currently, Brian works in the labs of both Dr. Song and Dr. Stein, conducting research on the pathogenesis of multiple infectious diseases. In his spare time, he enjoys playing ping pong on the University of Maryland Table Tennis team, playing sports, especially tennis with his friends, playing music, and annoying his roommates.

Melissa Meyerson | Chemistry

Melissa Meyerson is a Chemistry major and Chinese Language minor. She intends to earn a PhD in chemistry and continue doing research after she graduates. In her free time she enjoys reading, playing soccer, and doing crossword puzzles.

Praveen Puppala | Biochemistry + Physiology/Neurobiology

My name is Praveen and I am currently a Biochemistry and Physiology and Neurobiology double major. I have been interested in the sciences for as long as I can remember and hoping to get into pharmaceuticals as a profession. My hobbies include playing tennis, video games, racketball and the guitar. I am very excited about this project and am looking forward to what we can achieve!

Anjana Sekaran | Finance

Hii! I'm Anjana, and I'm a Finance major on the premed track in the class of 2014. I've been on Team BE PURE, the most awesome team ever, for more than a year now and have greatly enjoyed my time on it. Aside from culturing algae and making growth media with the biology subgroup of BE PURE, I love to spend my free time singing with UMD's premier South Asian American a capella group, Anokha. I also enjoy dancing, watching funny movies, cheering on the Redskins (usually hopelessly), and hanging out with friends, including my BE PURE teammates. I'm so excited for the next two years of hard work yet loads of fun with a motivated and fun-loving group! :-)

Yoon Shin | Chemical Engineering

Yoon is currently a Sophomore Chemical Engineering major at the University of Maryland. He is involved with couple of research projects on campus. He currently serves as the team leader for the Gemstone team, BE PURE, and is an undergraduate research assistant for a nanoparticles laboratory. He works in Dr. Ehrman's nanoparticles laboratory in the Chemical & Nuclear Engineering Building, and he prepares copper oxide nanoparticles and conducts several analyses. He is interested in research projects focused on renewable energies. He wants to pursue graduate study in chemical engineering and ways in which renewable energies can become competitive in the society.

Outside of research and academics, Yoon likes to spend time watching and playing sports. He roots for the Washington Capitals and the Indianapolis Colts. He relieves a lot of his stress through these leisurely activities. If given the opportunities, he would like to travel to foreign countries. He wants to try foods from different cultures while he visits beautiful travel destinations.
